The Altar was a sacred place in the temple were the Israelites would offer animal sacrifices, not only as a method of worship, but also as a ritual for the forgiveness of sins.

The Altar was a place to encounter God. The sacrifices offered in the altar needed to be the best of what the Israelites had so that they were pleasing to God. Nevertheless, even during that methodological old altar system, God was interested in other sacrifices.

“The sacrifice you desire is a broken spirit. You will not reject a broken and repentant heart, O God.”  Psalms 51:17 (1 Samuel 15:22)

Throughout the Old Testament, we can read about the Altar being destroyed by enemies and battles and how the Israelites took joy in rebuilding it.

The old Altar system is way gone. In the New Testament Paul explains a new system.

“We have an altar from which the priests in the Tabernacle or tent have no right to eat. Under the old system, the high priest brought the blood of animals into the Holy Place as a sacrifice for sin, “Hebrews 13:10

The cross was the ultimate Altar of grace and Jesus was the final sacrifice. His life was offered for the forgiveness of our sins. The Bible says that we are the temple of the living God (2 Cor. 6:16). When we accept Jesus as our savior, our heart and soul becomes an Altar within us. This Altar is the nest of our relationship with Christ.

“Therefore, let us offer through Jesus a continual sacrifice of praise to God, proclaiming our allegiance to his name. And don’t forget to do good and to share with those in need. These are the sacrifices that please God.” Hebrews 13:15-16

In this Altar we offer worship and the kind of sacrifices that please Him. As we go thru different seasons, changes and battles in our lives; our Altar will be in a constant process of improvement or it may even need to be rebuilt during these times.
