chayil” (חַ֫יִל)
—strength, might, or valor—
“Eshet chayil,” or “woman of valor,” — that’s the central line and idea of the Proverbs 31:10 poem.
“Who could ever find a wife like this one — she is a woman of strength and mighty valor! She’s full of wealth and wisdom. The price paid for her was greater than many jewels.” (Proverbs 31:10 TPT)
The meaning of this Hebrew word “chayil” is comparable to that used to describe an ARMY!
What some translations describe as “virtuous” others agree a more accurate translation is “mighty”.
She is filled with strength and courage. She is a daring woman. She’s brave.
She is not a checklist to look up to. She is a prophetic reference of THE BRIDE —the church.
“The price paid for her was greater than many jewels.” (Proverbs 31:10 TPT)
This Proverbs 31 woman portraits the bride of Christ in all she does.
Her fruitful life and her works are all a reflection of her devoted life to Jesus.
“This virtuous woman lives in wonder, awe, and fear of the Lord.” (Proverbs 31:30 TPT)
Her love, care and generosity extends to all, both to loved ones and those in need. She pours out from what she has, to extend to others wisdom, revelation, kindness and truth.
More importantly and centrally to the theme, she has a mighty warrior spirit. She is confident and determined, but her confidence comes from knowing where she belongs, and upon that she is able to conquer.
Who can find a woman like this? It’s obvious that this kind is rare and King Lemuel’s mother is making a point to thrive to find her. But if you see her, are you able to recognize her? Or have we gotten too familiar with the common, ordinary and ubiquitous of this world?
As a woman, and as a church, can we stand out from the rest and be the perfect and spotless bride the Lord will return for? Do we have that mighty warrior spirit to relentlessly fight for the lost and the cause of the Gospel? Do we keep ourselves ready and prepared to walk in our calling?
Will we rise as woman whose value surpasses a checklist? Will we rise as a church to be more than numbers, programs and attendance?
We can only become this Proverbs 31 Bride by knowing our beloved King in continuous love and relationship with Him.
“You are my pure, loyal dove, a perfect partner for me.
My flawless one, will you arise?” (Song of Songs 5:2 TPT)
